There is a misplaced notion in Canadian classrooms of the existence of a group of people called the North American Indians. While Canada is referred to as an ethnic ‘bowl of salad’ due to its great variety so races, ethnicities, religions and cultures, studies shown that the country is still highly racist towards the minorities. Racism remains an issue despite the country’s good reputation for its progressive anti-racist policies. Racial minorities continue to face opposition in their quest to gain equality. The minority in Canada have a host of problems that include but not limited to unemployment, lower education levels, higher infant mortality rates, low life expectancy and higher prison population.
Desi people (Pakistanis, Indians, Sri Lankans and Bangladeshis) in Canada are not spared by the racial prejudices subjected to blacks and people of Hispanic origin. This group of people is thought of as uncivilised and prone to causing problems alongside substance abuse. The worst part about the fact that there is racism against Indians is that not many people know about it. The issue is often overlooked and in most cases, racism directed at people of African or Hispanic descent is the only complaint taken seriously.
Canadians will look down on Indians as inferior people well, because India is a third world country and to get there, most Indians had to travel more than eight thousand miles and some Canadians will just think that they got there illegally because they are poor. Also, in Canada, the cultural dynamics seem to work against Indians. This is despite the hardworking nature of Indians and the fact that Indians are considered to be an educated lot.
