My Challenges as Student from a Different Country

I came to the US from India some years back for my studies. Since arrival, my life has changed mainly because the life in the US is different from that in India. My life as an Indian student in the US is a challenging one, and the key challenge cultural adaptation. More often than not, the discomforts I experience in the US are cultural related. In my argument, I defend the thesis that cultural adaptation, for example, food, accent, and time management, poses the greatest challenges to the students from a different country.
Among the biggest challenges I faced on arrival in the US is the cultural shock. The color of Indians is different from that of Americans and it was difficult for people to classify me as an Indian. It was also a constant thing for people to pick on me mainly because I had become a people attraction due to the fact I was the only Indian around. I was among the people of color, and people of color in the United States are not views to be equal to the White Americans. It made even myself to feel that I had come to a land of people who are superior that me, a color that meant more value than mine. This gave me a sense of insecurity whenever I walked amongst the Americans.
My second challenge was my accent since I had a strong Indian accent. Never before have I had interacted with the Americans and all my English instructors in all the level of education I had gone through were India with the same problem as mine. It was admittedly very hard for me to communicate effectively with the rest because despite having an Indian accent, the American one was also hard for me to grasp anything. I was, as such, faced with the challenge and task of working on my accent if I had to make it here. How about asking questions to teachers and they keep telling to repeat? Also giving answers to their questions and they could not ‘get me?' My accent was indeed letting me down. My accent not only told everyone who I was but also where I came from.
In India, not many are on-vegetarians, and yet another cultural issue arose here. I was used to the Indian foods, but here I am in the US at a place where there are not many Indians. The Indian food was indeed hard to find, and I had to struggle to adapt to the American dishes. The food here was really diversified, and it was also possible to find foods from any culture. However, I still had that challenge because such foods were also found in those areas that were culturally diversified. My ‘obsession’ with the Indian food also portrayed me as someone ‘backwards’ who have not discovered life’s varieties. It made me feel bad because I did not want to give up my culture, yet the people made me feel that I was always wrong. I could not eat where others were eating.
Another challenge arose on the issue of time management. In India, it is expected to find a people who are rather relaxed and who have a laid back culture. That is what I had lived with. Things here were the opposite, and time was one resource that people always seemed to scramble for. The culture here was that anything that has to be done has to be done soonest and within the shortest time possible. In that case, it was also possible to find people handling so many tasks in a single day. I had to keep up with this, especially in times of attending classes and handing over assignments. The main challenges for me in a situation like this was I too was used to being relaxed and to take my time in doing my tasks, but the people I am living now are different. I felt like I was not fitting anywhere in the US culture.
In conclusion, I have explained above how most of my challenges in the US are cultural related. My life in the US as a student from a different country means adaptation struggles in an attempt to defy the dominant culture and to take on the host's culture and living with it. Some of the challenges I have mentioned above that I have experienced as a student from a different country include the cultural shock, accent difference, time management and food.
